Iceland GCSE Geography Field Trip 2009!

Here is what two students reported on the first field trip of it's kind at Trafalgar! We had to be at school nice an early as there was a minibus waiting to take us to Heathrow. We said goodbye to our parents and away we went. It was a long journey ahead and when we got to Heathrow we were held up by Sian who forgot to check her passport before. It was out of date so she was told that she could not travel, so we went on ahead without her. As we sat on the plane Sian was reunited with the rest of the group as passport control with the help of John Foster let her through. It was quite a short flight and as we came under the clouds of Iceland the views were astonishing. At the airport we were picked up by our coach driver for the week Johan. We then arrived at the hotel just in time for tea but the food was not very appetising so not many ate it. We then went on a quick tour of Reykjavik accompanied by our tour guide for the week Darren seeing many views and buildings on a slightly warm night and when we got back we all popped over the road for a subway. On the second day we went to a lake where two tectonic plates met and also a crater from a violent volcanic eruption which had recently been played on by Bjork.

We also saw a huge waterfall (Gullfoss). Then we arrived at our second hotel which looked like a big shed however it was very nice inside which we had all to ourselves. On the third day we visited a glacier (Solheimajokull) and spent most of the day doing fieldwork. We then headed to the north coast and saw an amazing cliff of basalt rock columns. The next day we visited Geysers and an hydrothermal plant which was quite interesting - they have underground heating in their outdoor car park! then we headed back to our first hotel and then went to a lido which cost the equivalent of about 10p then had a subway when we got back. On the final day we went to the blue lagoon and had fun relaxing and putting rock cream on our faces. We then headed to the airport where we said goodbye to Johan and on the plane we all got told off for singing songs as other schools joined in. We then got home for about 11 O'clock and we all wished we could have stayed longer and would definitely recommend it to others and we hoped to go again. By Richard Edwards and Ben Brown
