As per Stage 4 and 5 of the Demographic Transition Model, today one of the effects of women waiting until later in life to have babies was reported.
And remember, the later a woman waits to start a family, the less children she is likely to have, then remember to link this to MEDC characteristics such as education, emancipation of women, materialistic lifestyles, careers for women... !
The authors concluded: "Increases in maternal age would have caused a 48% increase in births with Down's syndrome in the absence of terminations between 1989/91 and 2005/7.
"However, terminations of Down's syndrome pregnancies due to an increase and improvements in antenatal screening have caused the number of live births with Down's syndrome to remain constant."
